Playboy.com / Digital Culture: Stevie “KillCreek” Case, Videogame Designer and Playboy Model – Pictorial and Live Chat
May 11, 2000
By David Kushner
If you think computer games are strictly boy toys, then consider Stevie Case, one of the most renowned women to crash the scene. A few years ago, she achieved online fame after beating John Romero, co-creator of Doom and Quake, at his own game. Now she’s one of the top designers at Ion Storm, the Dallas-based company that is preparing to release Romero’s long-awaited first-person shooter, Daikatana. Oh, and Romero is now her boyfriend as well as her boss. Here’s what Case, or “KillCreek,” as she’s known online, has to say about life as a grrl gamer:
Playboy.com: How’d you first get interested in computer games?
Stevie Case: I’ve been playing computer games since my dad brought home an Apple IIe when I was in second grade. After that I moved on to Nintendo games, which kept me busy for years. I was one of those kids at the back of the bus on the way to the Science Olympiad bragging about how fast I beat the latest game! During my freshman year at the University of Kansas, some good friends who lived down the hall from me in the dorm introduced me to Doom and Doom II. From the first moment, I was completely hooked. That fall I spent my student loan money upgrading my PC so it would be fast enough for Deathmatch!
PB: What’s it like to be a woman in the male-dominated gaming community?
SC: It has been quite an enlightening and challenging experience. Developing a reputation as a hard-core female gamer has played a major role in my getting to know people all over the world, including some of my biggest gaming heroes. Early on my gender caught the attention of plenty of folks in the industry and certainly helped me get that first introduction and a foot in the door.
Beyond those early days, being a woman in such a male-dominated industry has brought its share of challenges. Plenty of people — both men and women — have all sorts of expectations for how I should behave, dress, look and run my life. Some expect me to play the role of the unassuming farm girl, while others expect me to be some sort of poster child for girl gamers. However, I found out a while back that living to meet others’ expectations doesn’t make for much of a rewarding, fun or interesting life. I’m a great deal happier just doing my own thing. The guys I work with are exceptionally cool and do not treat me any differently because of my gender. They accept me for who I am at work: just one of the guys on the team. That’s how I like it.
PB: What are the biggest misconceptions about gamers?
SC: I think two of the biggest misconceptions about gamers are that they are antisocial and violent, when in fact as a group they are neither. Competitive gaming in particular has been a terrific social outlet for me over the years. I’ve met all sorts of interesting, kind people from all over the world through my involvement. I’ve formed some very special friendships with people I originally met on the Net or in a game of Quake.
Of all the gamers I’ve gotten to know, none at all are violent people, and they are actually rather well-adjusted! Some of my most knowledgeable and intelligent friends are hard-core gamers. I think it’s easy to pigeonhole gamers without any firsthand experience, but anyone who sits down at a computer and spends a bit of time in a game with them would tell you different.
PB: How do you think you’ve changed as a result of your experiences playing and making games?
SC: Long ago, as a political science major, I had a passion for my work, but I was not excited about the day-to-day aspects of politics or practicing law. When I discovered games I realized that you really can love your job and also be quite successful at the same time!
The happiness I found has led to all sorts of other changes in my life, as well. Since I moved to Dallas to pursue my gaming career, I have found that I am much more motivated. I finally lost the 50 pounds I had been trying for so long to get rid of, and it feels great! Making the leap to games helped me to realize that the only way to be truly happy is to live by your own rules, not limited by outside expectations. I love my job, found a wonderful boyfriend and truly found myself through games. I can’t imagine being happier, but I don’t rule anything out anymore.
PB: There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Daikatana: why it’s taken so long to release, whether or not it’ll live up to the hype, even questions about your role in the development process. What were the biggest challenges for you while making the game?
SC: The biggest challenge for me was staying creative under intense pressure and scrutiny. Creating is much easier when it is a hobby rather than a job. Once the excitement of getting a job in gaming wears off, you still have to go to work every day and come up with fun and exciting stuff and meet your deadlines. I have been very lucky to work in the company of many talented individuals who keep me going and inspire and frighten me with their work on a daily basis. Any time I feel stuck, or just need a suggestion, the guys on the team are always willing to help. That kind of teamwork really keeps me going. The knowledge that thousands of gamers around the world will eventually be playing my levels also provides me with the necessary fear and excitement to get the job done!
PB: No one really knows what to expect with the game. How do you feel now that Daikatana’s finally nearing release?
SC: It’s extremely exciting to get the game out to the public after so much effort. There has been so much hype and speculation that it will feel good to put it all to an end with the game itself. I think that John has really made something special in Daikatana. He certainly has a passion for it, and I believe that it shows in the design. I hope gamers enjoy it as much as we do! It’s just a terrific feeling to put so much work into something and stick with it to completion. I find it very rewarding.

Live Chat with Stevie Case, Videogame Designer/Playboy.com Model
playboyhost | Welcome, everyone, to Playboy.com’s live chat with Daikatana designer and Playboy.com model Stevie Case! Hello, Stevie! |
steviecase | Hey everyone! Thanks for coming! |
nightcrawler | Hi, Stevie! |
coolkat151 | Hi Stevie, from Kansas City, MO! |
steviecase | Hi, I used to live in Kansas City! |
guest2 | So, why pose nude? |
steviecase | For me, it was more like, Why not? Playboy approached me, and I had no doubt in my mind — it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity! |
admin | Stevie, what’s been your biggest accomplishment to date? |
steviecase | I am most proud of successfully suing my high school on a First Amendment issue. They had censored a book from the library; we took them to court, and we got it back. I won an intellectual freedom award for that. |
nightcrawler | Have you done any other modeling before? |
steviecase | A little over the past year: Details. Rolling Stone. Hopefully, a calendar next month. I hope to do more. It’s fun. |
nightcrawler | I hope this won’t be your last pictorial. :-) |
steviecase | Me too! |
guest27 | When did you get into videogames? |
steviecase | I’ve been playing since I was little. I was an intense addict. I really got addicted as a freshman in college with friends. |
guest45 | Donkey Kong or Space Invaders? |
steviecase | (laughs) Donkey Kong, definitely! |
guest2 | Stevie, what’s your favorite videogame of all time? |
steviecase | That’s tough…. My favorite game is Quake because that’s the one that totally changed my life. I also love Grim Fandango and Doom II. |
guest62 | So tell us about Daikatana. |
steviecase | We just finished it; it’ll be out next week. The game is huge: four time periods, three main characters and many sidekicks. It’s a first-person shooter, with adventure and RPG elements. |
guest10 | So what is a typical day like for you? |
steviecase | Well, nothing is typical right now. While we’re in development, the typical day is to go in around 10, work some hours, grab lunch, go back and work until I can’t see anymore. |
We’ll work as late as 4 or 5 in the morning.
guest70 | Do you find it to be an advantage or a disadvantage being a woman in a male-dominated field? |
steviecase | Both. The advantage is that it opens doors, they know your name, it’s easier to get yourself out there. The disadvantage is that it’s difficult to get people to take you seriously, to believe that you get work based on your talent. It’s a mixed blessing. |
guest22 | What’s it like to date your boss? And dominate him virtually? |
steviecase | It’s challenging! It’s terrific because we get to see each other all the time, but there’s extra pressure too. |
guest40 | Marriage in the works? |
steviecase | (laughs) You’d have to ask him! I think we both want to take it slow, though. |
nightcrawler | Do you ever play a game on the Internet, and surprise people with your presence? |
steviecase | Yes, sometimes. A lot of the time I play incognito, because people are either really friendly or really aggressive when they find out who I am. |
coolkat151 | What are your favorite games to Deathmatch on, and where would any of us be able to find you online to play with or against you? |
steviecase | Daikatana, Quake 1, and Unreal Tournament. I play on several servers in Dallas, especially one called 5-Assed Monkey. |
nightcrawler | Do you have a website anywhere? |
steviecase | Yeah, I’m just starting one at Stevana.com — we have just a sign-up form there right now. In the next few weeks, there will be pictures and interviews and all kinds of cool stuff. |
nightcrawler | What other things do you like to do? I saw in your interview that you mentioned working out; do you go to the gym religiously? |
steviecase | No! I work out only at home because I hate the gym. I do some aerobics and some weightlifting in my living room. |
guest55 | What are you reading these days? Do you have time to read? |
steviecase | Not a whole lot of time, but John, my boyfriend, reads to me in bed. We just finished Timeline by Michael Crichton. That was great. |
guest27 | When did you see your first Playboy magazine? |
steviecase | I must have been six years old, and I found it under my parents’ bed. It was the Madonna cover. I didn’t get caught, but they could tell something was wrong because I was so freaked out. I finally told them I found it. They told me the human body is beautiful and that it’s OK to look at it. |
guest67 | Did you go to E3? Did you see anything really amazing? |
steviecase | Yeah, E3 was a blast. I didn’t get to walk around much, but I saw a few things that were impressive: Anachronox, Rune and Chrono Cross especially. |
guest27 | What makes a good videogame, and what makes a great videogame? |
steviecase | The difference is keeping the focus on how much fun the player has. It sounds so simple, but it’s easily lost in the development process. There is too much emphasis on technology and flashy stuff. |
nightcrawler | When Daikatana is released, will you be touring around the country to promote the game? |
steviecase | Probably not. It got tons of press in its development. We’re just going to focus on the next game. |
nightcrawler | Are there any books or advice you’d give for someone interested in working on first-person-shooter games? |
steviecase | There aren’t any good books that I know of, so just do your research: Play every game you can get your hands on. That’s the best way to get a feel for them. |
thajudge | Regarding your comment on good games, doesn’t the game need to be more goal-oriented? Anything can be fun for a while, but I feel that you need to be working toward a purpose. My favorite games, such as Half-Life and Thief II, really draw you in, make you part of the story. |
steviecase | A goal is important, but it can take different forms. There are very simple games, such as Tetris, that have hooked millions with no story: It has a goal, but it’s not a story-oriented one. |
guest51 | What the heck ever happened to everyone from Impulse9? |
steviecase | They went all over the place. Several got jobs in the industry. Dr. Rigamortis works at Legends and several others work on gaming publications. Lawrence became a mecca for game developers. |
guest33 | Red wine or white? |
steviecase | I ‘d have to go with white. |
guest33 | Right wing or left? |
steviecase | Very left! Very very far left! |
guest33 | PC or Mac? |
steviecase | PC, definitely. |
nightcrawler | Can I still get a copy of your cover of PC Accelerator anywhere? |
steviecase | Good question. Maybe contact the guys at PC Gamer magazine. They’re a sister magazine, and they may be able to help you. |
guest13 | What’s up with the small Mac mouse that you are holding in one of your Playboy pictures? |
steviecase | (laughs) My photographer, David Mecey, wanted me to do it because he’s a huge Mac addict. He got all the hardware together for the shoot. |
guest27 | So what do you think of your photo shoot? |
steviecase | I love it! The photos turned out really beautiful. I wish they had put up a few more of me smiling, but I’m very happy with it. |
guest38 | Are any of your friends as good-looking as you? Do you know Gillian Bonner, perchance? |
steviecase | I do not know Gillian, but I’m hoping to meet her sometime. Unfortunately, because of the industry I’m in, I don’t know many women. |
thajudge | Where are you from originally? I know you went to KU (I’m from Pittsburg, KS). |
steviecase | I am from Olathe, Kansas. I moved to Texas about three years ago. |
coolkat151 | Do you ever make it back to Kansas City? |
steviecase | Yeah, I’ll be going up there several times in the next few months. My dad still lives in Lawrence. I visit him, and I have some weddings to go to. |
guest38 | If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you? |
steviecase | I’m 23. |
nightcrawler | Is the shrine to you after you beat John still up? :-) |
steviecase | Yeah, it’s hidden on the Ion Storm website. Enter the main site, and put your cursor over the word Games in the menu at the top. A tiny green “x” will appear in the top right corner of the screen — be sure you have your screen sized large enough to see it. Click on the “x” to get to the shrine! |
playboyhost | What other Easter eggs can you tell us about? Are there any in Daikatana? |
steviecase | A few if you look closely. Oh, I don’t want to give it away! You can find a certain special fish if you look closely, among other things. |
nightcrawler | What are the specs of your ultimate gaming machine? |
steviecase | I have it right now. I got a new machine last week. It’s a pIII 800, with 256M of RAM and a GeForce. I don’t think Ill need to upgrade for a while. Love it! |
guest38 | How would you classify yourself in high school? Were you a part of the popular crowd, or would you have considered yourself an academic/nerdy type? |
steviecase | I was a nerdy type; I always did well in school and was never popular. I was the student body president, but only because they were afraid of me. That later became an asset. |
guest27 | What have you written for Rolling Stone? |
steviecase | I appeared in Rolling Stone, on their Hot List. I think they called me a Hot Jock. I’m part of a league of cyberathletes. |
playboyhost | What do cyberathletes do? |
steviecase | I’m on the board of directors of The Cyberathlete Professional League; we host tournaments for videogamers. We had one last month in Dallas where we gave away $100,000. The first-place finisher got $40,000. |
The website is Cyberathlete.com.
nightcrawler | Do you have any preference as to video or sound card in your gaming machine? |
steviecase | My video card pick would be a GeForce2. For sound card, I would go with Soundblaster Live. |
guest27 | Have you seen the PlayStation 2? |
steviecase | Just briefly. But what I saw looked cool. |
coolkat151 | What to your mind is the best programming language out there? |
steviecase | Oh gosh. That’s tough. I’m not a programmer. I’ll ask an expert (speaks with John Romero)…he says C. I’m hoping to learn to program someday. |
guest38 | What kinds of music do you listen to? |
steviecase | I like a whole bunch of different kinds. My favorite band is Kill Creek, but I listen to lots of Stevie Nicks, Bree Sharp, Dokken — they’re awesome, I just saw them in concert. And Richard Buckner is phenomenal. |
guest38 | Is John Romero there with you right now? John, have you heard any of id’s comments on Daikatana yet? |
johnromero | Nope. Not at all. It’s not out yet. |
I’m really proud of it. It turned out great.
guest38 | Do you like Deftones or Limp Bizkit at all? |
steviecase | I like both! I don’t listen to either a whole lot, but I enjoy both. |
nightcrawler | What kinds of movies do you like to watch? TV programs? |
steviecase | I don’t even have cable, so not much. South Park is great, and I’m aVH1 Behind the Music addict, and I love almost any new movie. Gladiatorwas just terrific. |
guest27 | Are you talking about the band Kill Creek from Lawrence? |
steviecase | Yes, definitely. I borrowed my name from them, and they were very nice about it. They’re even coming out with a new CD soon. I’m excited about that. |
thajudge | How was the Hawaiian vacation you just took? That turn out OK? (Like it couldn’t!) |
steviecase | It was amazing! Relaxing. It was my first trip. I loved every minute of it. We went to Kauai and Honolulu. |
guest20 | Do you and John still play games, and who wins? |
steviecase | We play constantly, almost every day. I win in Quake and Unreal Tournament; he wins at Doom II. We’re even in Daikatana. |
guest18 | Have you played The Sims? |
steviecase | Yeah, I spent two weeks with it, and I loved it but was a little disappointed that it is so shallow. I wish it were replayable. |
thajudge | I’m really glad you included cooperative play in Daikatana; I’m one of the few people who still loves working together rather than DM, (though I do plenty of that). |
steviecase | We all love co-op; it was important to John to get that in. |
The single-player game feels a lot like co-op when you play with the sidekick.
guest38 | I played some of the demo and think it’s really great. Too many of the people I showed Daikatana to were predisposed because of all the bad press for releasing late. Do you think the game was pushed too early to the fans? Also, did Ion ever officially give a date and then slip? |
steviecase | I think it was pushed too early, and I hope we can avoid that in the future because I’m very proud of Daikatana; it’s a lot of fun and I don’t want to let anything get in the way of people trying it. |
playboyhost | We have time for just a few more questions folks, and you can start getting your goodbyes in too. |
guest27 | So what are your plans for the future? |
steviecase | I plan to stay at Ion Storm for several more years. I’m excited about whatever the next project will be, and I want to be a part of that. Also, I want to do more modeling — it’s been a blast, and I’d love to do more with Playboy if they’ll have me. |
Another short-term goal is to get my website up and running, and I’ve promised myself I’ll write a book before I turn 30.
coolkat151 | Is there an email address or P.O. box that people or a fellow Kansas Citizen can reach you at for info on games or advice or anything? |
steviecase | Sure. Email me at killcreek@ionstorm.com. |
playboyhost | OK, everyone, let’s have your goodbyes and thanks to Stevie for a great chat! |
guest27 | Thanks for being with us, Stevie. |
nightcrawler | Your pictorial turned out great too. :-) |
coolkat151 | Goodbye, Stevie! Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to bump into ya while you and John are in KC. Bye the way, I have the Daikatana demo and it’s terrific. Great job! |
guest51 | Stevie, this is ZzeusS from ICT, you used to own me in Quake at the House…but it will not happen in UT — ever! :) Good luck on the new lifestyle, may see you in KC, I’m at the Plaza. C-ya! |
thajudge | Good luck in everything, and I hope DK goes over good for you! I’ll be watching for your next titles! |
guest38 | Will you and John be Deathmatching anywhere tonight? It would be cool if all of the chat attendees could get a match in with you guys. If not, thanks for spending time to chat with us. John’s a lucky man. |
steviecase | Thanks a lot you guys, maybe we can do it again sometime. You asked terrific questions and this past hour has been a lot of fun for me. Please visit Stevana.com, and come say hi to me at the next E3! |
playboyhost | Thanks, everyone, for your participation in another great chat! Remember that Playmates chat every weekday in the Playboy Cyber Club atcyber.playboy.com. Goodnight! |

She is hot, a good involved gamer and sort of a celeb with quakers. What’s wrong with her being invited. Some of you so called cyber-athletes just take yourselfs and a game too damn serious. T&A = Exposure= more profits(incentives) for the whole gaming industry. Which leads to all these toys we have and desire. Just look at the vid card industry and the effect gaming has on it and vice a versa.
My 2 cents.

Aw gee forgot my closing point…
Ofcourse the soviet aint a good thing (even I know that) But you see that without censorship we will have extremities in a collective that changes the enforced set of rules. This really highlights that its NOT what people do thats important its how its interpreted. The problem then is that its problematic to get a clean interpretation on any issue.
I do not think that human equality principles can be applied in aspects where its hard to interpret the meaning. Salaries are easy: equal job=equals pay, but when it comes to illusive issues like these is a moot point yet again.
PS: Now the female/male discussions is a problem, but I think most of it originates in the fact that most women likes to work with men and not other women. And the males tend to like working with males so the women is fighting uphill. Now the reason for this is ellusive (might be old genetics) but a large part I think is that males are supposed to carry more meaning a women/male work relation often cant be fair (yet). But thats only me thinking loud and not something I consider “right”. But its a hard issue, for instance “Being a gentleman” works against all concepts of equal rights but how fund would things be without it?

:) Hiya folks have fun yet? This is most probably not read anymore but I just felt I wanted to chip in since I am bored at work and leaving tomorrow.
My background, oh old. Heard of Killcreek way back when she turned the world around by trashing Romero in Quake, think she joined a female clan or something way back then. I also knew she got hooked up with Romero (ex as I understand it) and I also knew she posed for playboy but had no idea she had a boob job. So yes I was around when Castle Wolfenstein 3D popped up.
My first position here is to level the playfield, the general feeling I got when I read most of the thread is that it turns into a women bashes men bashes women thang which is way wrong. So I start with saying that men can be jerks, and women can be jerks also. Thats equality for ya :) Just as in all communities or collectives a dominance of one race/opinion/gender/etc/etc makes the collective biased. The point of equal rights is to try to make people realise this and to stand on a higher level and see things for what they are.
As an example we can take this community; most are men so things go like this; Aw gee a girl cool (who would care if it had been a man to start with), in a all women group the situation had been reversed. We are forced to accept that these things happen, the human is a being largely controlled be a will to fit in which in turn favors stereotyped groups, ofcourse these things might/might not be apart of out genetical heritage or not but thats a moot point in all but a VERY large perspective.
Anyway, what has all this to do with Killcreek? Well the point has been missed by most I think. The main reason for inviting her is that she is well known. Thats it. Now the reason for that might be that people only have seen her in Playboy (sad) or that they actually know about her involvment. There is no blame on Killcreek whatsoever she if free to do what she wishes, the only blame can be placed on the promotion of her role so that people from that only get the opinion that Playvoy is the only thing she has done (dont know never saw the promo).
:) What most people fail to realise that until the human psyche changes (if it does) we can only enforce rules that we find morally right. This leads to a collective full of conflicts where extereme behaviour will be a way to gain attention. In Sweden for instance we had a fairly good human equal thing. All it takes is a few individuals that ignore that and for fame does what they want (strip naked or whatever), if it catches the public eye it will get on the billboard and thus it draws a crowd etc etc etc You see the problem? To really enforce a human equality in a large scale you need to add censorship, a good example is old Sovjetunion :)
/Have fun

wel… i don’t think he’s stupid , and i was expecting much more people to react on my last quote because it was indeed the exact opposite of what smurf is saying..i was quite aware of that…. the reason why almost no one is reacting on that might be one of the following:
A: this rediculess thread is not being read anymore, and about to end , haleluja !!
B: No one understands what this is all about, and who can blame them..
C: No one is paying attention ( exept for a few ) or don’t care about what others are saying…
my point is this: this is not what gaming is about guys.
And smurf; you think its funny how i think i know you because i’ve said these things about you…???

the bottomline is this : Godsmurf has been trying hard to be asshole #1 on CB, and he’s succeding very wel lately…. once again- as he has been told many times before – he’s forgetting what gaming is all about… imho gaming is about having fun, if not alone or on the net, then with friends or on a LAN…. if you can catch some money while doing al this, then that’s very nice….. but he’s just taking himself to seriously ( or wants us to think that.. ) and al this pro gaming stuff is just a hipe. Its cool that there is so much money going around , but thats just for a handfull of very skilled players… so the main reason why most poeple come to big LANS is TO HAVE FUN… and if there wil be some girls around, then that wil be ( lets hope ) a nice distraction.
So Godsmurf…stick with what you do on CB ( whatever that may be ) instead of thinking it makes the gaming scene look bad that there are attending female gamers to big lan events… We’ll make that up for ourselves.. 8)

—————>SEX SELLS<—————-known fact. =D
Yes, consumers fall for it every fuckin time :) People like nice things, you’re just trying to look smarter then the companies which you arent. You’re being played haha.
Its like you go to the local grocery somewhere, you see two brands of milk, one has a picture with a nice sunset and a cow or two on it.. all made to look nicer then in reality.. and the other shows a picture where you see the cows getting milked, with all the ugly surrounding shit around it. You’ll take the first one for sure. This means you’re being ignorant cause probably the first uses the same system to milk the cows as the first. Companies know this. You obviously know this also but dont act on it.
This is same for all I guess, things that appear nicer get more attraction then things that look as they are in reality. If 98% of the people that game online are male it would be stupid for a company not to use some sort of thing that attracts that group. And as you point out, sex sells. So its very smart for the CPL to get someone as a representative who attracts that group. Aka kc, she’s perfect for it. 1. She gamed. 2. She’s known as such in the gaming scene. 3. She has the ‘T&A’ guys like to look at. Who would be more perfect for this scene? Played.
And fyi, women are just as bad as man are. You have any idea why all them “boy bands” are so fuckin popular? Cause the music is that damn good? No fuckin way, most of it sucks bigtime but damn, girls like them boys. Played again.
I’d say people are ignorant as fuck and we DO know it but cant help falling for it again and again just cause it makes us feel good.. you want to deny all that?
Or just throw all the people that go for big tits or boybands from the world and hope the “less ignorant” people will create a world you would like. This means, btw, that the world will stop evolving. No more innovations, cause there’s no money. You need the mass. You want back to the stone-age or summin? Cant really understand why you use the internet anywayz, you are against it damn.

Yeah! Ya can also buy posters from fatality and other famous quakers in your local poster store!
Anywayz.. why is it that the gaming scene is mostly a male scene? Somehow guys dig sitting behind their comp day after day, the majority of girls dont.. I mean heh, they dont really understand why we do it.. its like, ‘wtf you’re behind you’re comp for like 8 hours straight, day after day, damn, isnt that boring?’ And if ya dont know em personal they’ll probably think you’re a nerd or summin.
So until girls dig computers/gaming as much as guys do you’ll never get rid of the nerd status, kc attending a lan or not. Atleast she’s interested in the gaming scene, unlike most other girls.

I’m going to assume anything I was about to say has already been said. I dont know KC personally, and i doubt many of the people flinging mud at her here do too.
Its a reality that the gaming companies pander to “geeks and nerds” thinking we’ll go gaga over a knockout model. But to simplify things a bit, I’m sure we all would.
Sex sells, even Frued would agree. But what I would object to, is imediate judgement of KC as a bimbo. What basis do we have for that?
Independent of that, carshows have models on their cars, most major sports have cheerleaders, I doubt models or babes showing up at gaming events would really make us look that bad.
I dont think we should sit around a presume what everone’s intentions are motivations are and judge them on those presumptions.

If genders were reversed, there’d be 90% girls and the guest would be a popstar who was already a renowned gamer. Any problem?
btw, since when does ‘female Big Brother contestant’ = Playboy model?
Playboy model = ‘escort girl’?
KC = ‘bimbo’ or ‘artificial babe’?
Feminism = people telling women what choices they should be making?
Equality is not dull. Things do not have to be the same to be equal. The sexes are equal, but different.

It’s about empowering women, it’s about women being able to choose. i may not agree with all KC’s life choices, but I defend absolutely her right to make them. Actually, I am concerned that she only got invited to appear in Playboy because of her gaming skills. There are plenty of other gorgeous women around, they didn’t have to pick her. I think her image as a gamer will put other women off being models.

Can i make a few points – as a total outsider.
Seems KC is invited on merit, not assets. If she is, then this shows an awful lot about the assumptions and prejudices of those objecting to her presence. Quite clearly she is not there SOLELY for appearing in Playboy. If her celeb status has tipped the balance in her favour, then so what? Her invite would also be justified because of the interest generated by her being a gaming playboy model. This is a good thing, cos, let’s be honest, even if you are not predominantly geeky adolescent male nerds, gaming still has that image. KC is far more likely to attract girls to gaming than to scare them away.

The only thing pathetic about this whole conversation is this conversation in whole.
There has always been good looking, boob jobed, huge breasted women in shows. There’s always good lookin babes in car shows and they are not there because they are great drivers and yes, they are paid.
KillCreek beeing an oldtime gamer and having even little experience in level designing and the gaming industry is just a plus.
Some friends of mine actually entered a foikin’ building industry show because they got free tickets and there were good looking chicks there. The chicks weren’t there because of their advanced knowledge of bricks (and yes, they were paid to be there).
I don’t give a rat ass if Stevie was paid and neither should you
Just enjoy the show – and her company of course ;)
ps. I never attended a game show and prolly never will. Not because I’m afraid to labelled as a nerd but because they are too much trouble =). I just enjoy some games when I got the time.
pps. after 9 months in the army, I pretty much drool when ever I came across any female. WE MEN ARE THE WEAKER SEX

The main discussion is wether she’s been invited to the CPL because of her (obvious) involvement with the CPL , or because she has been in playboy.
I can tell you for sure that just hiring another local girl who has been in playboy is cheaper then flying one over from the USA.
Is it that hard to comprehend that she wasn’t invited alone (both Cliffy B and Angel Munoz have been invited too) and she was the only one who wanted to be there hard enough to free up the time ?

So nothing links to her being invited at least in great part for her being a “hot bunny”. 6. Movies are bad for society cause they also have hot people appearing.

That is a question between the view of social constructivism versus your deterministic “primal instincts”. I for one do not think having girls as primary sexobjects has anything to do with primal instincts, just as I don’t think black people or jews are genetically lesser then white.
Why do you suddenly bring up racism, anti-semitism and even more previously homophobia ? I find that to say the least very strange… I thought the discussion covered something which is in my view completely different.
And I believe that having girls as primary sexobjects (wether it is the case in KC’s appearing at CPL Holland or not), has EVERYTHING to do with primal instincts.. why do you think that sex sells ? why has every ad which should address females small kids in it ?
It really works both ways you know.. for men AND women.. why do you think Brad Pitt/DiCaprio movies attrack so many female visitors ? It ain’t because of the talent of those actors.. believe me.
My fear is that you want the human race to be more complex than it really is.. we’re not that much different from animals.
We may have somewhat more intelligence at hand, but that’s about it.
Your “primal instincts” is just a conception used for conservation of existing ideas and relations. Further more, the connection between the urge for reproduction and playboy-bunnies at LAN-parties is not casually determined. You have to seperate ideas of facts from moral standards. How things are do not interfere with how we think they should be. And how things are, is never certain. And as piglet pointed out, things do change, and so has your concept of “primal instincts” done; what used to be thought of as unchangeable facts has indeed changed. Before taking the concept “primal instincts” to the discussion you’ll have to argue for what that concept stands for and why we should accept it.
My reply to Piglet’s post was merely to show that it didn’t contribute to this discussion and was ment in a cynical way – I was suprised Piglet didn’t bring in “world hunger” and other injustices.

If you know the answer how to change your own primal instincts, please enlighten us. GL trying though.
Woman still wouldnt have the right to vote, black people would still be slaves in some parts of america and Jews would have do hide because people hated them and blamed even bad weather on them.
You forgot the Islam.. you’ll have to turn the biggest Religion on the world around too.. you have valid point in your opinion.. GL again.

It’s great if she isn’t, but I still think this has at least a big part in her being invited. And her being a playboy bunny is how she seems to be promoted and recieved. The fact that there is a link to playboy in the news item above is enough for having this discussion. In other words I’m not attacking her in person for posing in playboy (that is an other discussion) or even CPL for inviting her, I’m asking why there has to be a link to playboy here at clanbase if she is invited as a level designer and/or CPL-staff?
If you read the original messages at gamez.nl, cpleurope.com & netgamez.nl you will see that they mention what you like to see. The clanbase news item is the only one mentioning she has been in Playboy.

No, why would there be a difference if you make maps or pose in playboy, both things ya do out of ya own will. You make it seem she can’t be respected if someone mentions she’s in playboy.. reason: cause you’re uptight and scared of the word playboy?
The persistance and stubbornness with which you keep missing the point is really amazing.

Cause we’re not all uptight freaks who get scared when they see the word playboy somewhere? It’s probably there cause its some of the highlights of what she’s known for..
What disturbs me most is that there wouldn’t be a discussion like this if, say, John Carmack would go to CPL Holland. Just for the way KC looks these days, people like you ASSUME that this is the reason for her coming to the CPL. All I do is disagree with that assumption, because she already was there to promote the CPL years ago, when she was this pure and plain little girl. You judge her by the way she looks and by some decisions she made out of her own free will that didn’t harm anyone. I think that’s wrong, even discriminating.
Maybe I’m too naieve. So once again, if she WAS invited for her looks, I totally agree with you that this would not be good for the gaming community. In this case, I just think you’re too cynical.
What disturbs me is that Carmack wouldn’t need a link to playboy. It’s great with a woman in the gaming community, it’s a shame she needs to be a playboy bunny as well to be noticed. I really hope she was not invited for her looks. But at least to me it seems like this surely is in focus. I would not discuss her as a playboy bunny if this was not how she was promoted, for example here above. If there was a news item about this woman attending the LAN and a link to some info on her relevant work as a level designer and a discussion about Daikatana or whatever and NO link to playboy or NO sexistic comments, I would be overjoyed. So for the last time, this is not abuot Killcreek as such, it’s about the image of having a playboy bunny as an attraction for a LAN, I’m asking why the focus is on her being a nude model, and not a level designer and CPL-staff? Wouldn’t it be better for all, including her, if she could be respected as such, not as it is now, when all that seems to be bad excuses for having over a playboy bunny?
No! You’re banning stuff she’s done! Why? Cause you get “hurt” by it? So sad. You have problems with yourself.. why oh why you start trying to convince other people to have the same problems with themselfs? Get some selfrespect or summin.

This is sexistic and a typical example of objecitification of women which at least I don’t want any part of, thus my critisism. Be clear then. The world is cool cause nothing is equal. All that objectification is bs. If people want to do things with their body let them. Judging them on that is so wrong. Same as judging people who dont let their boobs fixed. You pick a side. Again, same as with smurf, you’re expressing *your* opinion here. Not something the scene should really obey to. Objectification is NOT “bs”, it’s a fact. There is a connection between individual choices and norms in the society. Opression of minorities (women, homosexuals, ethnical minorities etc) exists, and are examples of what I mean with unequality. Do you REALLY think this is “cool”? I really hope you don’t mean this, but if you do, then we’re down at “opinions” and we can only agree to disagree. I’m however expressing an opinion and also (this is were you won’t follow) I’m TRYING to discuss it in a general context.
Also I mean your “opinion” about objectfication being bullshit is bullshit, and if you think it’s “cool” not being equal, you have to agree on discrimination as a whole. I for one will not support this.

Killcreek has been a famous gamer ever since she beat John Romero, and she has been a CPL official (master of cerimonies) ever since (or shortly after that anyway). Now you can call me naive, but i’d like to think that played a BIG part in her invitation, and i’d also think that i’ve she didn’t have her boobs fixed she’d be invited too.
By the token of your reasoning, thresh couldn’t be invited either, cus hey, who needs them old retired heroes who revolutionized the game.

I don’t think it’s fair for a guy to tell a girl how to feel in such a situation. Be fair and turn the situation around and tell us how you would feel. Imagine there were a guy who is famous for having his penis enlarged and who wears tight pants to show it off. This guy is hired to draw some extra attention to a gaming event; there’s a crowd of nerdy girls standing around him to get a glimpse of his big penis in real or to be photographed with him. Would you feel like you belong there? Personally I would not be ‘scared’ or feel insecure, but I would find it a pathetic situation that I’m not comfortable with as a guy (just like I wouldn’t feel comfortable at a Chippendales show or a similar girl thing) and that I just don’t want to be part of, and it could be enough reason to stay away from that event.
Thats personal taste and life style. Nothing todo with being equal. Announcing your personal taste as being something other people HAVE to understand is a bit strange. Just say *you* dont like it. Nothing about the “gaming scene image” cause you’re not the whole scene.
And the question you asked, well.. I wouldn’t mind at all. If the “nerdy” girls want to do that let em. First, I would probably not be interested in that type of girls, no matter if they go for that or not. And second, if they would be girls I would normally be interested I wouldnt mind them having some fun with whatever they wanne do. It’s not like my whole world collapses or summin.

I say she shouldn’t be invited for the sole reason that she has big boobs and has been in Playboy.
Who’s saying this?
If Sujoy were a mediocre player with nothing special about him except the colour of his skin, I would have a problem with him being invited “just to have some dark skinned people around”, which is obviously not the case.
Again, who’s saying she’s only invited cause she got boobs?
About the “regular girls get scared away stuff”. What self respecting woman loves to hang around nerdy drooling teenagers that think it’s a major thing to get a glimpse at some silicon boobs? Imho you mess up “self-respecting” and “accepting everyday discrimination and objectization”, or to you it’s just the same thing, which imho it is not.
What self respecting woman loves to hang around nerdy teenagers that have a 100% focus on the game they’re playing at the lan?
Other then that fact, you’re saying all those people at such lans are nerdy teenagers who drule when they see girl with bigger then normal boobs? Stereotyping?! Jeez. You’re actually saying the whole gaming scene IS a nerdy scene.. gl on trying to convince the rest of the world it isn’t then if you’re saying it actually IS.
I agree with you that this thing is blown way out of proportion. Nevertheless has Godsmurf a valid point here.

Well you might want to explain that thought a little bit more in detail, because at it is, it defies every possible concept of what we call “logic”. Looks like you haven’t even read my comment. One last time: I don’t say she can’t be invited because she was in Playboy. That’s here own private business. I say she shouldn’t be invited for the sole reason that she has big boobs and has been in Playboy. If Sujoy were a mediocre player with nothing special about him except the colour of his skin, I would have a problem with him being invited “just to have some dark skinned people around”, which is obviously not the case.

Like never. Atleast not with girls who have some respect for themselfs that is. If you mean the type that get scared to hell if they see a girl with bigger boobs then they have; well I guess that are the female nerds then?
What was this about? Making the image less nerdy? Like duh, if you’re right that girls wont come cause killcreek is comin then I guess she fullfilled your wishes of making the gaming image less nerdy. As in less nerdy girls coming to events like this.
This is all such bs. Ever been to a trance party? Innercity in holland anyone? Damn, I really had to get glasses to find girls there, with strippers which probably had boob fixes aswell…. like NOT. Plenty girls.

Is this really SO hard to understand? People here don’t complain about her having her breasts inflated or about her coming to the event. She certainly is free to do those things as she pleases. People complain about her being INVITED to this event. Even if she is not paid, she still gets all her travel expenses paid and why? Because she is such a good gamer? There are far better (female) ones (not me though). Because she is so involved in the CPL? So are a lot of other people nobody would even consider inviting. Face it: It’s her boobies that got her invited and that’s just plain sexist, sheds a bad light on the gaming scene and yes, has the potential to scare “regular” female gamers away.

Nope, it isn’t equal. And not gray. And not dull. If ya’re not equal ya stand out which can’t be cause that would mean other people might not feel comfortable with that. Wouldn’t be a world by humans, would be a world by robots.
If thats what ya want let them “nerds” do their job and *they* will eventually make your perfect world you always dreamed from.

I did not say anything about other scenes now did I? Of course this problem isn’t limited to this particular scene, never said that, never would. Or do you seriously mean that it’s ok with all this crap because you can find it elsewhere, or that I cannot critizise here if I don’t attack exactly every other place injustice occur, because I honestly don’t get your point here.
Just that there is no real point on whining all the time. It’s the world, if ya dont like it go live on mars or summin. Things like this will change like over hundreds of years, not by one post here or there.
You’re the one making this scene look bad, it isnt at all, its a normal scene, unfortunetely with a higher then normal percentage of man but thats uhm a problem of the girls not wanting to play or not being THAT interested in computers/gaming etc. Same for scenes where there are mainly girls, no need to make a big deal out of it.
A too high percentage of one or the other sex in different scenes are probably concerned with stereotyped gender roles, and that’s a pretty big deal too. Anyway the big deal is in this case in my opinion is having a playboy-bunnie posing as an attraction at a gaming event. Does a girl have to have breast implants to be accepted in the gaming community? I sure as hell hope and think not.
Hell no! Why the fuck do you think like that? Boobs fixed or not, who the fuck cares. It’s her life. I dont hope you’re saying girls who have their boobs fixed can’t be accepted in the gaming scene. In this world fiddling around with your body means you get extra attention, thats life, just like M.Jackson. Stand out and get noticed. You’re adding all that other crap to it. Just dont and it will get alot less attention next time.
Me making the scene look bad?? Do you by this mean that “yeah, hope they have a wet t-shirt” makes it look better? I really don’t think you do. And that we should just don’t bother about for example objectification of women, beause it’s everywere? If you look at threads like the one I quoted above from outside this scene, I tell you it does not look good. It looks exactly like if gamers are a bunch of 14 year old sexually frustrated nerds, which brings me to…
You’re calling them that, I’d say its just being young. Some do it worse then others, but who cares. If you got problems with them why do you stay around such people? To record logs for prove? WTF are you doing…
If it wasn’t for people like you nobody would find the gaming scene a “nerdy” or a sexually frustating teenage scene. So much BS. Grow up and start accepting your problem with the scene might be on your side.
I don’t agree as I said above, and if I’m wrong well then thank god people like me exists then, since there indeed IS a lot of sexist shit around here!!! Yes, you’re the only two who are smart in this scene. The rest are nerds. Fuck sake, people live their lives and choose whatever they feel like. If get a good feeling with gettin ya boobs fixed and posing nude etc go ahead. If other people have problems with that they should start looking more at their own lives instead of others.
You want to denie all that? You want a dull world or what?

I do not think this is a funny post, on the contrary I find it quite tragic, but perhaps I should just give it a rest, get a sense of humor and accept the flaws of this world and the unawareness of gamers in general?
Yeah! More stereotyping! We want MORE! It’s something people say who think they’re smarter then the rest and want to share that information more then anything. It makes em feel good about themselfs I guess. Sad sad.
Babes as objects, hell yeah.. as long as you dont know em personally they are objects.. just like Brad Pitt is to loads AND loads of girls. That’s exactly my point. She was with CPL long before she did all these things to her body, and she would still be there if she hadn’t physically changed since then. That’s why I don’t think her posing in Playboy is the reason for inviting her to CPL Holland. She was a gamer then and she still is. The way she looks isn’t (or shouldn’t be) important.
Still, I do see your point Goldsmurf and I would totally agree with you if KC was invited to join the CPL AFTER her silicon treatment and her nude session. Since this isn’t the case, I don’t think you can assume that she’s being used as some bimbo to please some horny kids.

KillCreek _IS_ a gaming-legend. I didn’t knew that she was a level designer or a model or something, I only knew her from her gaming skills. In fact the first demo I got from the internet was KillCreek vs Romero in DM2 and I was really impressed (that was a _long_ time ago :p). I think the CPL is politically correct and hired her before she was in playboy, because she was one of the most famous gamers at the time. Feminism, bah – equal rights, that’s the point. You want woman to attend your event, too? And you think your event cannot go without sexual stimulation? Then don’t forget to hire some attractive guys for the female audience.
This leads me to the difference between girls and boys. Men are likely to fall more easily for some pro-babes, than girls the other way around.
Talking about KillCreek. Think what happened if some good-looking gaming-scene guy (Paul Steed comes to mind) would’ve been invited. I think the girls wouldn’t mind ;-) But the guys wouldn’t mind either. That’s the difference. After the event they’d proudly telling their friends: Hey I was there with Paul Steed, y’know – the chick-magnet.
But please, no (male or female, ugly or not) strippers at a gaming event. If you want to see them nekkid, go to the clubs.

That was WAY before Killcreek posted, actually it was pretty much how the actual discussion started. The issue about her getting paid or not is not all that this is or was about.
If you don’t have the balls to stick to your original accusations and conspiracy theories (that killcreek is being paid to come) then f off please.
I cant see that me nor Godsmurf has changed views, and if you can’t see past the “get paid”-thingie you could please f off as well, if that’s the level of communication we are using here.

Bzzzzzt – wrong. If KC or any other person subscribes like any gamer there is no discussion. Babes, models, porn actresses, house wifes and career women are all as welcome too as far as I’m concerned, in fact everyone is. You completely missed the point of the discussion, congratulations.

I agree there are a lot of sexists out there (my GF is a female gamer too) but to regard women as unsuitable for a lan party based on the amount of clothes to wear in magazines is bullshit.
You should take some classes in advanced feminism or something.

Excuse me but I have to make one more long and complex comment, I will try to stop beating my head against the wall after this one, ok?
Having a playboy-girl posing for a gaming event and refusing to see any problems with it is narrow – not open – minded. If her posing nude wasn’t relevant there wouldn’t be a link to playboy in the news item (as stated before). This is not an attack on Killcreek (from my side at least), it’s far more general than that. Someone said that if it was a male level designer without a record as a nude model invited it wouldn’t have been a discussion nor a problem, and that is absolutely correct, and that is exactly what this is about.
If Killcreek would have been invited as a level designer and had not posed nude in playboy, and there was no link to playboy above, there would not have been a problem. Her physical attributes or gender as such is not the point here (or rather should not be the point). The fact that it is hard to imagine a male level designer that had posed nude and was used to attract visitors reffering to his physical attributes on the other hand IS the point here.
This “scene” is full of misogynic (fancy word huh?), racist and homophobic tendencies, i.e. lack of open minds (hopefully this is partly a question of age and maturity, meaning that people will ‘grow up’), and it makes me sad. Therefore Godsmurf is a hero in my eyes for even finding the power to say something about this at all, knowing the beating he will take just for speaking his mind.
It is not open minded to refuse to see the problem here. It is on the other hand arrogant to say “oh, go get laid” or “relax”. If you invite a playboy model as a poster for an event, then you do have some questions to answer, as I see it. I do not think this is a funny post, on the contrary I find it quite tragic, but perhaps I should just give it a rest, get a sense of humor and accept the flaws of this world and the unawareness of gamers in general?
And this thread, the CPL-policy with playboy bunnies (level designers or not) is all just helping stating the stereotype of gamers as sexually frustraded teenage boys labelled as ‘nerds’ and of women as objects (no matter what your intentions are or your sex or age is). Not wanting to realize this or not care to bother is arrogant and narrow minded.
Godsmurf, your still my hero, and many others here still needs to check up what “feminism” really means…

Why can’t you just forget this bullshit and just play games.. because that’s what it’s all about : GAMING.. FUN… like it’s ment to be :)
Personally I couldn’t care less who (male OR female) attends a lan or a compo, as long as I amuse myself talking to people (not caring about what gender or background they have).
That being the main reason why I don’t attend lans anymore (ok and because of my very little spare time) – gaming in general is being taken too seriously.. don’t forget the bottom line : FUN !!
Sidenote : that’s why I probably enjoy female attenders even more than male attendees on a lan – they know how to put things in perspective better in general. Ow yeah.. and they have boobs :) j/k :)

What you’re really saying is that women visiting a public event, should apply to certain qualifications that have nothing to do with the reason they’re invited. KC is an ambassador for professional gaming for 4 years now, never misses a CPL event and, most of all, she’s a gamer just like the rest of us. What do I care if she had a boob job, get a few tattoos or whatever she has done with her body lately. It’s HER body, it’s her own choice. It’s a sad thing that a woman has to be ugly or at least shouldn’t be proud of her body (artificial or not) before she is considered talented, without male chauvinist pigs thinking she got the job just for the way that she looks. Women’s lib is still a long way to, apparantly…:(

Gimme a break. Babe exploitation doesn’t scare girls away because the babes look better. It scares them away because it underlines ‘men-only’. Pretty half-dressed girls that are only meant to arouse male visitors (which is not the case at CPL holland) are an insult to women. They are ok for carshows, but they are rather unfortunate in gaming events.

A lot of people have been invited to come to the CPL, and all of them (including KC) where invited because of their involvement with gaming, KC seems to be the only one who can attend, it’s not that she’s been eclusively invited because of her looks.
Wether you believe it or not is not really my problem since you seem to have problems changing an opinion on a subject (which in this case is purely based on assumption instead of fact (did you even ever took the time to talk to one of the organizers ?)) but I think assuming you know what people think is downright arrogant .
Open minds will dominate.

Now this was a FUN thread!! Hehe.
Here’s a summary for people who don’t take time to read it:
Everybody thinks it’s great Stevie is coming, and some (including me) have general doubts about organisations exploiting the babe-factor too much, because it tends to scare woman away from the community.
That general exploitation made some guys sceptical about the motives of the CPL regarding Stevie, but it seems things are politically correct.

There’s a massive thread starting up on ClanBase about Killcreek going to the CPL Holland event next month, and how this reflects on us as gamers.
Stevie Case aka ‘KillCreek’ who became famous by beating John Romero in a QW match and even more famous by appearing in Playboy magazine will attend the upcoming CPL Holland event.
You can read the rest of the post, plus comments here. I’m not going to give my opinion on this matter, as I suspect that there’ll be people who will flame me either way. It’s quite an interesting discussion though, mostly with Godsmurf (a clanbase admin) arguing one side, and various CPL Europe officials arguing the other. There’s even a post from Killcreek on the matter.

From my point of view, the discussion here is only because KC posed for PlayBoy. I don’t know if it was the main reason to invite her, but even if shes not in playboy, I would like to see her simply because she’s well known person – a female gamer. I understand that it’s hard to swallow for a lot of players – I personally dislike “objectification of women” too, but I think I can go through it and enjoy KC like a CPL staff member, quake player and… as a cute girl of course! Hi Killcreek,
Most people know all that I think, and I don’t think anyone wants to detract from your work for the CPL, nor from your work as a game designer (whatever was wrong with Daikatana can’t be blamed on 1 level designer).
The point of the discussion was that you were not invited for those reasons, but mainly because you posed for Playboy. Or can you imagine that the announcement linked in the news item would not show a sexy picture of you but of, say, Mike Wardwell (who also has a lot of merit in game design and for the CPL), adding that he will be introduced ‘with a lot of spectacle’ and that he will pose on pictures with us? I think not.
More generally the point is that inviting celebrities or babes to gaming events appeals to the stupidity of gamers, detracts from the gaming aspect and is simply pathetic. A better example was Carmen Electra who got paid to show up on a Battletop event and to pose on pictures with any guy that asked. But that’s long ago so I took this occasion to start a discussion on something that bothers me.
The point was NOT that there would be anything wrong with posing nude or with you personally or with females attending gaming events or whatever – those who try to make it look that way either want to sabotage the discussion, or are just too stupid to understand it.
Cheers and see you in Holland

If you want to go to the CPL Holland – why wouldn’t Stevie want to go? Because she’s above that or what? Maybe Stevie got tired of her boyfriend and wanted to have some fun? paid or not… put it this way: If you would get the chance to go to the CPL Holland event – and get paid… wouldn’t you? Why wouldn’t Stevie then? The issue of she being paid or not is rather irrelevant. So is this whole discussion.
The picure of gamers being 14 year old miniature Bill Gates’s with pale skin and greasy hair. If it’s true do you really care… and if so why? If you worry about what people are thinking of you just because you’re a gamer I would say you have more important things to think about than wether Stevie Case is attending the CPL Holland event or not.

In July of 1997, Angel Munoz first contacted me about this crazy idea he had — that gamers could actually make money being fulltime Cyberathletes. In fact, Angel asked me to sign on as the first ever Cyberathlete at our initial meeting, and I happily agreed. In those early days I put a lot of time and effort into helping Angel contact some of the best players in the U.S., form the first Cyberathlete team, and promote the idea of the Cyberathlete. I stayed on as a Cyberathlete for many months, and eventually temporarily parted ways with the league in order to focus on level design. During that time I remained a strong beliver in the league and the concept, which lead to my joining the CPL Advisory Board — a capacity in which I still serve today. Just recently I again officially joined the staff as the official Master of Ceremonies. So yes, I am a big believer in and supporter of the CPL, and I have been literally from day one.
In fact, I have attended every single U.S. event that the CPL has ever organized, beginning with the original FRAG. Very few people can claim the same.
Yes, I am a female. Yes, I have breasts (oh the horror!). Yes, I worked at Ion Storm. But guess what? I am a gamer, and I love the CPL and all that it stands for.
Seems rather simple to me. I can’t wait to see you all at the event. It’s sure to be a blast! In the mean time, calm down and stop taking life so seriously!

She isn’t there as an sex-object, she has a name in the gaming community and it adds some flavour to the event (too bad CliffyB isn’t gonna be there, I would have nicked his gold chains ;-)
And I also fail to see why so called “feminists” are talking thrash about people for inviting a girl over ro a lan party out of her own free will, I though feminist where pro women making their own choises, she chose, so live with it ;p

So why did they do it? number of visitors, more income, more gamers, more money, more money $$ ..$ $. $ $$. $$ and $$
And here I see, all those geeks who would like to meet her… for what reason? makin a move on her? Romero would prolly kick ur butt if u tried that one.
I’d say get fuck away from ur pc’s get stoned/laidwhatever and prolly if ur not a complete dork, which u ofcourse say on the internet, u meet a girl, drink with her and tadaa
If u do such things, u are someone who have probably no need in seeing her and if everyone acted like that there souldn’t be future cpl’s with KC or other Game babes, cause they (babes like kc) wouldn’t have effect on gamers. But if I look at everyone here, this isn’t the case and so CPL wins more and more and more gamers, money etc etc etc

The girl at the CPL is called KillCreek, she’s a US gamer and level designer and she will be there to help promote gaming and the CPL brandname, just like the other CPL volunteers and staff.

Yaya, was just to make it a bit more clear.. the word sucks anywayz.
To answer your questions: there are in fact female gamers on LAN parties and other events, but hiring Playboy models is the best way to scare them away.
The girl at EC2 is called DeeDee, she’s a Dutch gamer and she was there to help with the organisation just like the other volunteers.
And hell, she did something “feminists” would be proud of… heh.
Just saying its not all that black and white, she wont scare them away just as stripper girls at trance events doesnt scare girls away. If she does indeed scare some (gaming?) girls away I think them girls have some kinda problem themselfs. As if they dont go to a store where there’s a picture of a good looking girl hanging on the wall hehe. Or not go to the local grocerieshop cause they actually sell playboy, oh oh!

Smurf, what was the purpose of that girl at the EC2 LAN btw?
And with the gaming scene going “not so well” lately I dont think its that bad to attract more people by using her or whatever else to attract people.. sure “she” will make some people think all the people going to that event are nerds, but what for people are that? Why do you care so much about them? Cause you want the scene to have a “better” image and thereby gain more interest from outside the scene? Well, if that would be true why did I never see any “feminists” go to lans?
They dont go anywayz and will not ever, not even if ya start handing out “home-cooked-cookies-by-boys” for free. Some things are male only, some things female only.. it will take alot more time to mix that then a CPL event here or there.
Get over it, some companies have to make money in this world and if a famous girl will do that; eat it and stop complaining. The current world is not about the truth, its about getting food on the table for the family and having some fun now and then yada yada…
Amsterdam got a nerdy image? Cause of the redlight district? Come on! Live damn.

I wonder if some “male q3 player” who had been in playboy would have been invited to CPL event to “represent CPL in the world”
I think not, 90% of players are male (90 is few compared to reality) and it would have just been like “wtf is that lama doing here”.
Imo, this invitation is just an insult towards women who come to CPL to play and not to see some chick who has nothin to do anymore with gameplay (and don’t tell me Daikatana is a game)…I hardly see Killcreek sitting behind a computer and participating to a compo…
I have nothin about KC though, she proved she was a very good gamer, but inviting her to such an invent is crap at this time.

Seeing you want to have a real mature discussion about this (yes, I am capable of expressing my view in a mature and normal way, don’t worry) I will respond to your latest comment.
You say: “It is about the fact that a girl who’s showing her breasts in playboy is used as an attraction for a gaming event. This is ‘pathetic’ or just down right stupid. There is something called objectification of women, and yes, it is serious business.”
I really don’t see the big problem about this. Stevie Case is an ‘important’ game developer. Besides that, she is also a nice looking girl, who chose to pose for Playboy. As the target audience of the CPL is probably men between 14 and 25 this is the person to invite. Because wether you like it or not, boys/men in that age group who go to the CPL like gaming and women.
Who are you to judge her, she made the choice to pose for Playboy and because of that she shouldn’t be a special guest at the CPL? If she would be forced to come over and stand naked on a podium to show ‘her assests’ then you would have a valid point. But she’s not, she going there on her own free will. I think we should respect that.

Let’s shun ALL beautiful women from professional gaming, they obviously have no business there!
Anyway, i’d like to think that she’s @ CPL Holland cause she’s a famous gamer, not just because she’s a babe. Those opposed to here aren’t really doing here justice, cus apparently you see here as nothing more then a dumb blonde hired to attract geeks to the event.
I’m wondering how it would change things if kc wasn’t a silicone injectee or if she was downright ugly. I gather you wouldn’t hear a soul. Likewise if makaveli was there to play master of ceremonies.
I agree that CB (and the gaming/internet world in general) is infested with more hormones then the world transvestite convention, but over the years i’ve noticed the other side of the hormonol scale (feminists in this case) overreact easily as a consequence.

I don’t think most people here are even aware women might read this or even visit clanbase.
And even Killcreek might read this forum.
Besides that, that Stevie has been in playboy, worked for ion storm and is Romero’s boyfriend has really nothing to do with her invitation.
The reasons why we invited her are:
– She works for CPL
– She is well known in the gamers scene
– She plays games at a high level
– She is female
If we only wanted a famous playboy girl we could have asked some Big Brother or The Bus girl, which would have been much easier and cheaper to arrange.
But would someone care if one of these girls would come? Don’t think so. And anyways what would these people have to do at our event. They are not involved in games at all.
For the people who would like to know, we also invited other people:
– CliffyB, was the first one we tried, but he is far too busy with his work at Epic
– Kornelia, but she didn’t respond at all.
– Angel Munoz, president of CPL. He is still considering, but will probably be too busy.
I just would like to say, don’t make any assumptions if you have no clue what it’s all about.
Anyways: nice long thread.

Do you think more girls feel incited to visit this LAN after reading posts like the ones on display below?
Pimp, you are truly embarrassing and I just hope you simply don’t get the point. The only one that is trying to act macho is you; this is not about if this woman is being paid or not, neither is it about wheter people are virgins or not. It is about the fact that a girl who’s showing her breasts in playboy is used as an attraction for a gaming event. This is ‘pathetic’ or just down right stupid. There is something called objectification of women, and yes, it is serious business. And yes it’s just as bad if it should be a racing contest. And no, I should not just give it a break or chill. And no, “we’re just kidding around” is not an acceptable excuse either.
These kind of things are not going to make girls feel more welcome in this gaming community thingie but it sure as hell makes me ashamed at being a part of it. It’s sexistic, it’s pathetic, it’s degrading for women and ‘gamers’ alike.
Pimp (again), your bad comment/joke about that there is nothing bad about paying women to get them to do what you want them to do etc. shows that you are probably not able to comprehend what I’m trying to say, but hopefully some of you other people that did not seem to fully understand what Godsmurf meant are.
Godsmurf called himself a feminist, and so do I. Anyone who still does not know what the hell I’m talking about and what that weird word means and/or is thinking about some stupid remark that is irrelevant to this subject, I first recommend to read a book about what feminism means or just keep silent.

But godsmurf is in a few points right. I dont believe shes paid for this event, that would be dump from CPL, because the are just atracting people with what you could call an escort girl and people arent that naive that they come only come for stevie. They are comming for the event, watch the better quake3 players play and play in different compos themselves too. She is not an motivation for me to come to the event as i mentioned, i would come for the compo. But on the other hand, she wont do it for free, that would be naive from here, she would make big bucks on this one if she gets paid (not that she needs the money, she is the girlfriend of an multi miljonair).
But who cares if she comes, i dont mind, most of the BYOC players dont mind i guess. She wont be an distraction for the compo players because they are just so turned into themselves, they dont even think at one thing than the damn q3 game and they are defenitly not thinking about the girl with the boobies……..

Regardless of whether Killcreek got paid or not, you can’t seriously say she was invited coz she’s such a good gamer. The best female gamer is called Succubus and there are at least a dozen others who are better than Killcreek. Killcreek got invited coz she got a boob job and posed for Playboy, and she’ll make the event more attractive for 15-18 year olds who don’t have any real social contact with females. Now I admit the gaming scene has a disproportianately large number of such pathetic adolescents, but my point is we should not typecast gamers that way coz it just makes us all look bad.

Now I admit the gaming scene has a disproportianately large number of such pathetic adolescents, but my point is we should not typecast gamers that way coz it just makes us all look bad.
no offence, but most playboy magazines are being bought by married men :-) In which in most cases I hope their not virgin anymore… trying to get some more satisfaction from whatever source… it just makes events even _more_ attractive then it already was…. and perhaps this is not an act to attract the so called “nerds-with-i-will-never-have-a-girlfriend” to the events, but this’ll also make the events more public to the non-gaming scene.

Quint: I care because I think the gaming scene makes itself look really pathetic by paying ‘babes’ to attend its events.
Regardless of whether Killcreek got paid or not, you can’t seriously say she was invited coz she’s such a good gamer. Godsmurf, I don’t understand what you are up too with this.
Stevie is definately not being paid for her come. And besides that why do you care if she was?

I could be wrong but it’s unlikely. Event organisers tend to pay women to show up and give the nerds something to drool over – Carmen Electra at Battletop, booth babes at E3, etc. Read the announcement: “you can get stevie case to pose with you on pictures and sign your computer”. You think she does that for fun? It’s a typical “hire a celibrity for promotion” act, she’d be dumb if she did it for free. If the Holland event is not paying her then the CPL is.
Of course event organisers (I’m talking in general now) would rather let everyone think the celibrity is coming out of his/her own interest, coz that makes the event seem cooler. There was a famous ‘scandal’ once with Claudia Schiffer denying she got paid to attend a certain event; it ended with a magazine printing the contract, which listed all Ms. Schiffer’s demands, pretty funny.
Well, Stevie is a player herself and she is from cpl.
We have asked here and she wants to come.
So think what you want.

Godsmurf: what is it what you don’t believe?
I invited her and she was very eager to come. The only things paid by us are the planeticket and hotelstay, but that’s normal, isn’t it.
And if you don’t want to believe that, who cares. I don’t.

Stevie is not paid to come. She is doing this on a voluntary base.
And about the lovely female *gamers*: Don’t worry, they will be here too. So prepare yourself, because you are probably not used to so many ladies at a gamers event.

You think paying some bimbo to show up is good for pro gaming? It will just make it all even more of a nerdy boy thing – don’t you feel pathetic when they have to PAY women to come?
All this in contrast with CPL Cologne where you had lovely female *gamers* participating.
