GameGirlz.com: Digital Chix from the Hips Rants n Raves

While a very avid supporter of the “women’s movement” in the gaming world, I can’t help but wonder if this site sets the movement back a few steps. For one thing, the site is so “hip” it makes you wanna gag.  I can’t help but wonder how a community expects to get itself taken seriously and to shake the image of being fashion-and-boy-crazy when “respectable” sites like Gamegirlz host sites that have over half their sections devoted to romance, meeting “boyz”, and other “hip” topics. Is she going to have an editorial on the proper shade of neon purple to re-skin the Quake rocket launcher with next?

Everybody is so concerned with being PC these days that I think there’s some misguided overcompensation going on. The online community (forgive the generalization) is feeling guilty about the treatment of females in the online world as second-class citizens intruding on forbidden ground. Well, the matter of the fact is, we _should_ feel a little guilty. A few recent incidents in the gaming community were, in my opinion, inexcusable.

Here’s where we come to the problem. We feel shamed, and have decided that from now on, women online should be treated exactly the same as men.
Good intentions, ridiculous goal.
Women aren’t the same as men, and  (hopefully) never will be. Women ARE interested in boys, fashion, the perils and possibilities of online romance, and even (gasp) computer technology.
What the female portion of the online community needs is to be treated WITH RESPECT, not like one of the men (they’re NOT, ok?)
Kudos for providing a place where women can be women, and guys can watch, participate, interact and maybe even learn something…

“I just HAD to compliment you on your midi of “Stupid Girl” — a title which seems kinda ironic for a killer site.  You should hear it on my setup with my Creative Labs AWE64.   My girlfriend is the total feminist and keeps up on the issues.  She turned me onto GameGirlz, where I found your site.Congrats on your success.”

“Cool webpage, I hope it takes off!”
