Q-Continuum.de: Cricetus Interviews AEon
Æon: “I am a little perfectionist.”
In the German 3d shooter scene the name “Æon” is a term. Æon can be described as a “primordial rock” and pioneer of the community in Germany. For many years his name was not just for outstanding series of game servers. In August 1998 he concluded his servers. The Continuum had a short time afterwards to conduct an extensive interview on this subject and about many others.
Continuum: Your name has long been a term in the
German-speaking and European scene. For the few of us who
do not already know you so well: Please imagine – and your previous
projects – shortly before.
AEon: I am my doctor in “physics” at the university of Bonn, and have
been quite close to the Internet for years, be it in IRC, through WEB pages, or
even through various GameServer.
It all started with Doom: A friend and I teamed up two PCs and
played DeathMatch maps over the serial cable. Later,
Doom2, Heretic and witches angetestet then, but this did not make as
much fun as Doom. Then came Duke Nukem 3D, for which I immediately began
to build maps . Point 17Uhr for a few days, I had ne new map finished,
which was then extensively in the LAN durchgespielt.
As we all did, I followed the
developments around Quake on various news sites , and when it came out, it was also
tested in the LAN . However, we were extremely
disappointed after the “gruesome” game at Duke 3D . The maps looked desolate, so unpleasant;), hardly any interaction in the
maps, and “Mr. Quake Himself” ran as if by syrup. Awful!
Quake lay around in the drawer for a while. Soon followed a Linux version of
Quake, which made it possible to
play in the * Internet * against more than two people (we had no W95 PCs). One night, I installed
Linuxquake and then played every night, and the weeks, on the Internet,
often to the ten hours at a time. An addiction was born;). At that time
I played mostly on Posbi and Splatterfest. I was fascinated primarily
by the right people, and not only from time to time, but
every night it was possible.
I met a lot of people on the Internet, Mikey had been there since the first game
night. We “chatted” for hours on the quake console. So
I met Callisto. Like me, the constantly same
standard maps went on the laces, so the idea was born to make a Quakeserver on
the legs. This offered so-called custom maps (DM maps, built by
third) in several level loops. It was the first of its kind
in Germany (I think). So something went wrong, but we needed
a mod (game modification the Quake greatly advanced, new weapons,
admin commands etc). The best mod for DM server was from Hawk, the
so-called Sever Modules. I began to adjust this, several people
later took on this, especially PM and Mikey, and really did
what it did. So we had a nice little quack server, which remained
rather an insider tip, because not too
many people were ready to download extra new levels. To support the server, I built a
Quake Page (Start: Monday, October 21, 1996, Aeon’s Quake Page ,

make servers more attractive, I built my first statistics in

thus had I made my first game server experiences. Like the Sun
‘s, walked me Quake so about 4-5 months before the appearance of Q total
at the alarm clock, and so I said goodbye to Quake. so when Q
came out, I was on fire again and new weapons, new levels,
better internet games, and more, that was December 1997, and it was
semester breaks :). Obsessively I built within a few weeks a
Q Page together (start: Tuesday 30 December 1997
Æon’s Q Page , and started on a W95 box a Q server I wanted.
Just see if it is possible to raise a server , which is better visited
than my Q1 server. There was a lot of effort after the release of Q²
, many people played on AEon from the start, even if
there were a lot of hardware problems on my server at the beginning. Apparently,
the ping to my servers was quite good for most, so that
more and more people played regularly with me through the propaganda, IRC, etc., and
after a certain minimum number of players was there, it ran by itself
.
As a module for DM, Lithium II quickly crystallized, which I
always remained faithful to. I tested several other mods, including CTF
(which was never my thing), but somehow it was all nothing. One evening
Callisto joined the IRC channel and announced a Fusion Rocket Arena II
server. I grabbed the rogue (sorry on merger :) and in an hour
stood the AEon’s RA2 server. I did not have any
more fun with Q² at the time , but I played with ^ AP ^ and some other RA2. This
was so much fun that I ran the server.
Also for Q² I wrote a statistics program. Since I
had learned from my mistakes with Quake, everything was written from the beginning in ANSI C
(portability!). Furthermore, I put great emphasis on
automation, because I did not want to
” stagger ” every day for hours . The stats then appeared fixed and ready as webpages.
So next to me are two DM maps for Q² (AEcyrena, AEshake2) of my pen.
Continuum: How do you see the scene today? How has it
changed to the beginning?
AEon: Well, today you take a lot for granted. Servers are just
there, and it is nothing more special to
choose from a variety of servers . Quake / Game-Spy has also
contributed to this. Today you click on a
server sorted from a list sorted by ping , and you play there. So why “constructively” what contribute
to the “scene”?
As in any “underground scene”, the atmosphere is somehow more cordial
and friendly at the beginning. After all, there are only a few players, so
you know the most, few servers, so you meet often and
for all it is new territory. Ie the Netiquette is still intact, because still
“go to Nix goes”. This is how I experienced it in the early days of Quake, which was
among other things a reason why it was so much fun to
play. Likewise, it was in the initial period of Q². A
careful palpation, no risky ne thick lip, because finally
we all wanted to enjoy our new toy Q².
And then that goes with the seriousness in the game (Q / Q²). Some people
have too much time and play maps “to vomit” (tm;), are
correspondingly good and “gamble” all the remaining fun players (those who
play less often). “Beaten” to be annoyed, so that it becomes
more and more serious about the game. Then it starts, the silly sayings are knocked
, there are bots (cheating when playing by
additional software / patches) on the “market”, and already the next round
of hetzkampagnen was born. Who plays well is called a cheater and
so on and so forth.
With Quake, I have not quite noticed this, but for
Q² where it has become intolerable. Now I’m going to go out at
a game.
Continuum: Next up you have your servers cut, they are
now legendary. How do you actually get the idea to
set up a game server and then spend a lot of time in the maintenance
?
AEon: I like to play 3D shooter on the Internet (read: addiction) … and I am a
little perfectionist … when I have to play ten hours on some server
, because there are no others, and * always * the same
Things annoy, then I tell myself: There must be a separate server over which
I have control. So I’m not saying that my server is better then.
It just seems that a lot of players like the server as
I put it together. My luck :)).
If you do something, then right … see automation of the stats, and
keep an eye on the server and restart it, for example, if something is
bad. Unfortunately, Q² is the ideal tool to kill time you
do not really have. My
work at the institute has suffered among my sufferings . But as long as it was fun for me to
play, I was also willing to re-check the work, which
is not so much, if everything is running.
Continuum: Finally, your servers were not 08/15 systems. What was different?
AEon: * I blush *:) … Please do not misunderstand, but it may well be
that it is partly because I am
very often in the beginning time on the servers . I’m trying to
“nourish” the netiquette . That is, when I am good, I “never” mumble “new
players, I let them come into play. If people have questions,
I answer immediately, make advertising for my webpage, so that one can read something
, and especially I take suggestions, which come from players, to
heart (unfortunately is only rarely suggested). I would like
people to feel comfortable on my server, and welcome the new
players when they enter the server with a happy Welcome to
AEon’s Q² server. “A good example” is my motto, which is
not a mesh, but so am I nunmal :). It pays off! The
players are coming again, and most of all, they behave. This is the
first few months on the servers. If I never play a lot,
the game starts to annoy (some people seem to continue to play with all their might
, although they are probably similar to them), I notice a
clear threat, which makes me even more demotivate to play … Mag
be that it comes just knuffig, that the Admin assumes the player,
who knows 8-).
After the somewhat esoteric;) to the somewhat manual things. A server
is only as good as its ping. In the good old times, people on my
Quake server still bravely continued despite the bad ping (from USA).
But that is over now. If the ping is not right, or
it is too much, the people play elsewhere. The Ping to my servers was
always quite good, despite the many “lag-gejammeres”,).
Then there is the choice of the modules … from the beginning I let the
lithium II Mod run, which one knew, one had become accustomed.
Say: Constant Moduletauschen annoyed only the Stammspieler. It’s time to add some
new nice DM maps to the level loops to counteract
boredom, but avoiding removing levels that are
simply not popular. A WEBpage to the
server is also practical, because so everyone has a starting point and can
get additional information. A mailing list would also have to be considered in order
to inform mainstreamers about news (maybe at Q3). A
ranking is also good, because then the players are motivated to
improve and come back again and again. All this is of no use if hardly
anyone is playing on the server, so the start time is very important.
My way is the way of the friendly service provider;) (sounds so
creepy, but I believe it is true). Only “a server hinklatschen”
will succeed in the fewest cases, just because there are now so
many others. (I have to admit that I have almost only played on my servers
, and I do not know how to use other servers.) Ops :)
Continuum: The visitors of your website have recently been shocked
. You have announced the closure of the servers, which is
unfortunately unfortunately now . To your motives was unfortunately not too much to
read. Would you like to tell us a bit about it?
AEon: I’m trying to describe my situation … I’ve
been playing too much for quite a while, and I’ve been spoiling my time elsewhere, which
meant that I had nothing to do with my work. Could
focus on nothing. This makes you depressed after a few weeks. At this
point, it should be mentioned that at least Q2 play
worse with me , especially when one is also sunk. The
visit to the meeting in Japan has additionally bled me physically. Then
came the whole story on IRC, because of cheats with bots, decay to
Netiquette on my servers. Furthermore, I had noticed what was going on with
3Daction. So much for my basic constitution.
Then, on Thursday, August 20, Kimble will flock
to me . He was pissed, because for some reason he
had been banned from my Rocket Arena II server (I had not done that) and
wanted to report to the university, which would certainly
have treated me with anger . Then I got the panic, I had never threatened anyone,
and I had gone psychically totally. Even if I now
think of the crap , I still gloat (I’m fine again, just thinking about it is
enough). Well, I later had Kimble on the phone and we
discussed the matter, quickly realized that it was probably a misunderstanding,
he had been deeply disappointed by me and wrote in the affect the enamel
. He also apologized for it several times.
This could have been the thing from the table, but I was psychically for
days at the end. This feeling of being betrayed and abandoned
was too much. I was thinking about what went wrong. See the
first paragraph, I was blackmail and could no longer freely
decide over my server, I had from Q2 eh full, and had absolutely
zero buck still to get anger. Therefore, I have
closed the server to have more time for “a life”. The latter I
have to practice, however, still Kimble almost
done me a favor , because I closed the server sooner or later one way or the
other. But I did not find it funny!
Continuum: What’s next? What are your plans?
AEon: Torax was so fond of setting up an AEon’s help server, he got
the configs from me and we renamed the server to AETOR
(AEon TORax). However, the server hovered very much. We guess because he
ran under w98. Therefore, ^ AP ^, Torax, Trigger and I have
assembled and thought about how a Linux PC should be set up and where
to get one.
Comment: I listened to the IRC, and I was deeply disappointed
that you were lazing around 200DM and more a month on the Internet
, but when it comes to collecting money for a server
(20-30DM per person), then suddenly vinegar. hmmm …
Thankfully, ^ AP ^ will provide a lot of the hardware needed for
a server, so we now have a * own * PC together.
(The project is first on ice, I will not do anything with Q2 servers –
because of the possible trouble the indexed games on the net can make.)
If an “AEon’s” server should appear, then run without my
consent and I have nothing with them to do …
^ AP ^ waits for the first time, if the other three put one, they must
most likely have a password in front.)
I am now at Unreal. I just wrote (9.9.98) a Unreal Script
module, which writes massive player information in log files.
I write my parser in the days for Unreal. So much:) … the
statistics will be far more extensive than with Q². Take a look at
Æon’s Unreal Page , if you like (Shameless-Werb-Mode-Off :).
LAHeraser and I will also see if there is an “AEon’s Unreal” server can give.
In the long run I am planning an “AEon’s Quake” I [“server, with a
much improved / extended ranking, but let us
surprise what the future and id brings.
I would like to thank the Q-Continuum for the possibility
to put some things in the right light.
